NWHL Best Offensive Defensive Player 2016/17

Next up in my OTBL Awards for the NWHL’s regular season is the best ‘Offensive Defensive Player’. This is an award that looks for the players from the blue line who can add a bit of firepower along with their defensive duties. First of all I will be considering their production numbers, but will also take into account the line mates that they have been playing with, along with their contribution to the power play.

NWHL Rookie Of The Year 2016/17

With the NWHL having only just completed its second season, “rookie” is a loose term to use. Many of these players have plenty of hockey experience under their belt, having competed at world championships and seen ice time in the CWHL. Having said that, it is still their first season in the NWHL, so it seems only fitting that there be an award for Best Rookie of the Year.

NWHL Semi Final Boston v Connecticut – Keys To The Game

It’s finally that time, playoff hockey, and there is nothing quite like it. The first puck drop for the first semi-final will be tomorrow at 7.30pm EST as the heavy Isobel Cup favourites, the Boston Pride, will face this years’ underdog, the Connecticut Whale. 12th March NWHL Roundup – New York End Boston’s Streak

This weekend saw the final two games of the 2016/17 regular season, and what a weekend it was. The number 2 seeds, the New York Riveters, had one last chance to deny Boston the perfect season after coming close many times before. Meanwhile, the showdown between the Whale and Beauts would decide who would clinch the number three seed and avoid Boston in the semi-finals.

Boston were at home playing back to back games this weekend, looking to maintain a perfect record. Meanwhile, the Rivs were hoping to cause an upset in what could easily be the matchup for the Isobel Trophy Final, and Buffalo were hoping to gain any points to help them lift themselves further above the Whale.

With Connecticut playing two games this weekend it was going to be make or break to see if the team could get their act together and make a push to overtake Buffalo in the standings. Meanwhile, NY would look on hoping for a Buffalo loss, as that would secure them the #2 seed.

This was the final week of games before the all-star game hits Pittsburgh. With the announcement of a shorter season to give the players a chance to play for their respective countries in the IIHF World Cup, points in the standings are becoming a rare commodity. For New York and Buffalo as they continue their tightly contested battle for 2nd place, every point counts.
